"Holding Back the Tide"
"Holding Back the Tide"
In the spring of 1860 former President Franklin Pierce is convinced to run for President against the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln. During the course of the campaign Pierce negotiates a phased-out end of slavery. This ensures his election and lasting peace.
After winning the Presidency the economy booms until boll weevils attack the Southern cotton crop in 1863. The ensuing recession encourages radicals on both sides of the slavery issue to push their agenda. 1864 is a repeat of the 1860 election, except Lincoln wins by a landslide.
In April 1864 Rebel forces attack Ft. Sumter in Charleston harbor and the Civil War begins, for the first time.
With an extra four years to prepare General Robert E. Lee looks to make a bold strike against Washington and win the day. Lincoln encourages General McClellan to incorporate new technology and devise new battle tactics and make a daring assault against Richmond.
In the end both sides see a change neither expected. Who will win? What will American society evolve into?
